Busting Coupon Myths

Who said WHAT about couponing?

So I hear all these things about coupons, and I tell you they are not true! Here are some of the common myths associated with coupons.

Store loses money when they take coupons

Actually they can make money when they accept face value coupons. The manufacturer reimburses the cost of the coupon plus a handling fee, so the store makes more profit than when they accept cash in payment. The reimbursement is normally anywhere from 8c to 12c a coupon.
Now, when they double coupons, the store puts the extra money up for the double part. They are hoping that you purchase other items while you are in there to help counter such as milk, eggs etc.

The time you invest is not worth it

I spend about 2 hours a week clipping coupons and about 4 hours researching the sales. I do use a web site that does 90% of the work for me but still I save on average $200 per week with coupons that is $33 an hour. Most jobs do not pay that much. SO for our family it is very heavily worth the time.

Generic brands are so much cheaper

Without a coupon absolutely. Yet generic brands do not offer coupons so when you add the coupon in, more often than not the brand name is so much cheaper and can even end up being free!

Only Poor People Need to Coupon

Absolutely not, Millionaires use coupons too. Gone are the days of the stereotypical couponer. It is just a version of smart shopping now. I know that if we were to ever become millionaires I would continue couponing as it will be a way to keep money in our pocket.

Coupons only buy you junk

Yes they are a lot of coupons for processed food, but also coupons for fresh fruit, frozen vegetables, dairy products, meat and whole grain foods. Even if you live life on a 100% organic diet (Coupons are available for organic) there are so many things you can use them for. I always say if you never had to pay for toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, shower gel and razors again, how much would that free up for your budget?

Stockpiles take up too much room

Well lets be honest that depends on how much of a stockpile you want, our Faith encourages us to have 1year of food storage and to be honest that can take up very little room. You have to consider what clutter you have and reorganize. On the flip side to save a considerable amount with coupons the stockpile averages 6-12 weeks worth because that the average sale cycle. That can just mean a couple extra cans, razors etc which could take up no more space than a single tote.

What have you heard about couponers?
